Introduction

What comes to your mind if you think about waves? Try to imagine them facing the ocean:
  • You can surf the waves and drive some way along with them.
  • You can dive into a huge wave and enjoy moving up and down being under water.
  • You can look at waves breaking down and splashing at the beach - each time with a different form and intensity before the water streams back. It's like you are watching the ocean breathing.
  • You can create your own waves while throwing objects into the water which creates circles, or driving a boat which draws triangles.

This and much more you can experience when dealing with the 'ocean of sounds' - which is made of sound waves!

The Ocean of Sounds

Sound waves are one of the most interesting phenomenons we are dealing with in our day-to-day life. They are permanently crossing our ears and splashing our brain while we are listening to
  • instruments,
  • living creatures,
  • a lot of different noises in our environment,
  • and also tons of sounds that have been heavily processed, changed, or newly created by contemporary computer and audio technology.

Learning to become a Sound Surfer

The Sound Surf Project helps you to understand the different nature of sounds in order to become a really smart sound surfer:
  • First you will learn how to "surf for sounds" in the Internet. You will meet friends at the Freesound site, called "Freesounders", which share their own sounds with everyone who is interested to know and use new and interesting sounds.
  • Then you will learn how to "surf into sounds", record your own ones and modify them with powerful sound editing software, like Goldwave, for example. If you didn't know what is a "Doppler" effect or an "Equalizer", here you will learn it.
  • Finally you will learn how to "surf the sounds". You will learn to link sounds together and to navigate with them in real-time. If the sound waves fit well together then you might suddenly discover that you surf actually - your own music!
Eventually, you will be able to share your sound surf trips with others, send them by email to your friends, or publish them on the Internet.

Doesn't this sound good?
